JibberJobber + Pluralsight

JibberJobber + Pluralsight I sent this to the JibberJobber LinkedIn Group yesterday: Hey all, this message clarifies some things about Pluralsight courses and JibberJobber upgrades. JibberJobber is owned by me. Pluralsight is not. That shapes what we are able to offer to you Please share this with others there are many people who could benefit from what I share below. You have a free-for-life account on JibberJobber. There is an optional upgrade. Most people upgrade for the killer app: Email2Log. This integrates your email activities with your JibberJobber database. Its super duper cool. Pluralsight has given us access codes that we can give to each of you so you get 30 days of unlimited content viewing on Pluralsight.com. There are over 4,000 courses, most of them technical (programming, design, etc.).I have about 20 courses that are related to your career (informational interviews, LinkedIn, job search, career management, branding, etc.). Each time you watch one of my courses on Pluralsight.com you can report it on JibberJobber and get a few days of additional JibberJobber Premium. For example, you watch the Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile course, go into JibberJobber, report it, and get additional JibberJobber upgrade. If you watch it again, get  more  days. If you watch the same course five times, you accumulate more upgrade days! There is not limit to this. You  can get weeks and weeks and even months of free upgrades. This is quite easy to do just watch this video to see the steps.   (video embedded below) After 30 days, you will have the option to continue your Pluralsight account. If you are in a technical field (IT, programming, project management, product management, etc.) I think it makes a lot of sense. The price is $30/month. However, if you only went there for the Jason Alba videos, theres no obligation to pay after 30 days. They dont even send you a bunch of harassing emails to try to get you to upgrade. I cant extend your 30 days for you on Pluralsight. I dont have the authority or power to do that. If you get past your 30 days, you can pay $30 for another 30 days. Thats actually pretty inexpensive for what you get. My advice is to take advantage of every minute you have during the 30 days. Watch all of my videos. Watch them three times each. Get your fill. Take notes. Watch them again. If you do that, you will have sharpened your saw (Coveys 7th habit), and you will be ready to move forward. If you choose to pay for an account on your own, make learning a scheduled part of your day so you get the full benefit of your Pluralsight account. Again, please share this with others, as there are many people who could use either the online courses and training, or the awesome JibberJobber organizational functionality. Or, both. You  should know that if you watch any of my videos on Pluralsight, I get a very small kickback (even if you never pay them). I get compensated because I have provided them content, and I have introduced you to their platform. Its a win-win for all of us. Thank you! What Was Or Is Your Graduate Salary [ POLL ]

What Was Or Is Your Graduate Salary [ POLL ] What is your graduate salary? Why do we want to know? Well, because our Editor, Asya has had this poll set-up about it. The need to get an answer about the graduate salary is born out of our analysis of Please Poll Your Answer The Graduate Market in 2013 report by High Fliers Research. The report states, the  average graduate starting salary is £29,000. A WHOPPING £29,000 ! Wow. On looking deeper it was understood that this statistic covered the  top 100 graduate employers only. So tell us, what is or was your graduate salary. Your votes will remain anonymous and we dont log any more information than just your click. This will help us in getting a gist of the average graduate salary, from real graduates willing to respond. The poll is right next to this post, so please go click now, hardly takes 9 seconds ?? Career Geek And Social Media Do you use Social Media? Of course you do, or at least I hope you do. Because its quite a hot thing right now. You can find a job via Twitter, at the same time lose one as well! But this isnt about it. I just want to know how many social media accounts you have or maintain. At Career Geek we have Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Stumble-upon and looking to join onto the tumblr bandwagon. Social media is still one of our highest referrers and we are beginning to see the benefit of that. I wonder what your engagement level on social media is. Do you use it for any of your ventures? Oh, and by the way, here are our links to social media, do hola us there! You can Like us on Facebook    or follow us on Twitter. Interestingly, our Twitter account has grown and  continues  to grow at a faster pace compared to Facebook. But once we share something on Facebook, on some days we get more views through Facebook than Twitter! Pinterest is a wicked tool and quite useful for those of us following the careers industry. You can view all our boards on Pinterest. We are on Stumble upon, too but dont currently use it a lot, simply because it is more of a tool for our readers to support us and share our content. And we are still analysing the use of Tumblr. I have personally used Tumblr before and it is a good micro-blogging tool, but it had a lot of downtime issues. I know they raised some capital in the last year or so, but not sure if that has improved it or not. Do you use Tumblr? Do leave a link to your blog in the comments section and I would love to have a look. I was specifically asked to write about the poll ?? Which I hope you vote on in the top right of the sidebar. Else I will have to face music from my Editor! P.s.: We are just about there with publishing our first e-book its packed with tips about your graduate job search. Cant wait to release it for download to our readers! Stay tuned! Arrow Image: Wikimedia  / Featured image: Alan Cleaver via photopin cc 4

What Color is your Power Suit

What Color is your Power Suit Warning for the men who are reading this: This article contains references to color, style and stuff you buy to wear.   And yes, you should keep reading. We humans react strongly to color.   Color theory is an important element of any design, and it played a part in the clothes you’re wearing right now.   In this recent political season, you can bet that stylists spent many hours helping candidates send the right message through style and color.   If you can’t afford your own personal stylist, here are some general tips on color in the interview. We all have colors that we like, but we also have colors that like us â€" or not â€" more than others.   If you’re not sure which colors are your best, make a note of how people react when you wear your favorite colors.   There will be outfits that not only make you feel more energized and attractive, but will also attract compliments from others on a regular basis.   On the other hand, if there’s an outfit that attracts more sympathy than praise (“You look tired today; is everything all right?”) you can probably bet that the color you’re wearing doesn’t flatter you. Here are the basics on choosing flattering colors.   Skin tones (of every ethnic type) come in two basic categories: warm and cool. Warm skin has gold undertones; cool skin has pink undertones.   If you’re not sure which you are, hold a piece of bright white paper next to your skin.   Next, decide whether your overall coloring is muted or high contrast.   If you have very dark or very intensely colored eyes or hair, your coloring is high contrast.   Vivid, bold and primary colors with high contrast (think red against black) will flatter you. If your hair and eyes are in the soft or medium range (light brown hair, green or blue eyes, for example) you will look better in softer or muted colors. Whatever your complexion, most experts agree that you can’t go wrong wearing blue.   According to one design website, “Blue represents calm, stability, hope, wisdom and generosity.”   It’s no surprise that most politicians choose variations of blue for suits and shirts.   It’s also more flattering than white against most skin tones â€" important if you are under hot white lights for a photograph or television appearance.   Blue offers a wide range of tones â€" from almost black to soft pastels â€" so you’ll be sure to find a shade that flatters you. Experts also agree that wearing bold colors are a sign that you are a confident person who doesn’t mind attention â€" which could be a good thing in some interviews.   Wearing red, purple, or bright orange is a strong statement.   Chances are, you won’t make that color choice unless you’re comfortable with it, anyway.   If you’re interviewing with a more conservative company, stylists advise you to use those bold colors as accents; add a red scarf rather than choosing a red suit. Some articles recommend brown as a universal color, but I don’t buy it.   Brown makes most people look mousy unless it’s the perfect shade for them.   Gray has gravitas without being as authoritative and dramatic as black.   As with blue, there’s a shade of gray that works for everyone.   Here are some more articles on choosing color. http://www.ehow.com/how_3249_choose-colors-flatter.html  http://www.ehow.com/list_6860795_color-suit-men-wear-interviews.html http://career-advice.monster.com/job-interview/interview-appearance/colors-and-job-interview-clothes/article.aspx

How to Create a Highly Effective Certified Resume

How to Create a Highly Effective Certified ResumeThe key to being able to create a highly effective certified resume is by using the right certified resume writing template. In this article, we will discuss some of the basic things you should look for when choosing a template. You want to know what the specific skills are in the position you want to apply for and what qualifications they need to be listed. This is referred to as the professional profile. Your professional profile will consist of job descriptions and include certifications that can be verified as being current.Certified resumes can be customized according to what you want to include. The templates you find online can be used as is or you can even customize it yourself. This will save you time when filling out your resume. Once you have it customized as you can start applying for the positions you want. The other factor to consider is the certificate verification. Each job listing may require different certifications, so it is important to note that you must list all the certs you hold. You want to make sure that you also have a list of certifications you have held which can come from your certifications.org website. This is another way of keeping track of what certifications you have held.To help you determine what certifications you need to list, you can look at the website of the certifications themselves. The majority of the certifications do not require certification proof to be listed. You should list what certifications you have held so that it is easy to see if the job posting requires certifications or not.If the job posting does require certifications, be sure to list each certificate you have held and whether or not they are current. Keep in mind that the certifications may not have the standard certification logo on them. For example, a business that sells health care products may have aboard and pin on their business website. You can keep track of these with a good quality, high resolu tion certificate logo. Finally, take the time to get your certifications proofs listed in your resume. Using a template or custom resume writing software is a great way to keep track of certifications you may have listed on your resume. Many of the companies who post resumes on the internet use a tool called a CV checker to scan through the resumes of potential employees, but for the purpose of creating a certified resume, this does not matter. This is not a call to deny any other information from your resume, just include the certified certificate information on your resume. When you do this, you will have a highly effective certified resume that has been approved by the hiring company.

Susan Lahey Never Thought Shed Be a Tech Writer or a Business Writer [Podcast] - Career Pivot

Susan Lahey Never Thought She’d Be a Tech Writer or a Business Writer [Podcast] - Career Pivot Episode 54 â€" Marc interviews career pivoter and co-author Susan Lahey about her life and work, including a pivot from journalist to freelance writer and author. Description: Susan Lahey is Marc’s co-author of both Repurpose Your Career books. This is one of the best of the 25-plus interviews Marc has recorded in the last year. Susan is a freelance writer who is driven to take on new challenges, whether that’s writing about the nature of meaning, the scary adventure of changing your career, or truly death-defying acts like jumping out of airplanes and parenting. Marc was Susan’s first real Austin client. Listen in for thoughts on enduring hardship with bravery and purpose. Key Takeaways: [1:14] Marc announces his first audience survey on what demographic listens to the podcast, what you like, and what you would like to hear about in the future. Please take the survey at CareerPivot.com/PodcastSurvey. This will redirect you to a Survey Monkey page. Marc will keep the survey going through 2017 to hear from you. [1:55] Marc reviews the series format of this podcast for new listeners. The previous episode was an expert interview. This episode is a career pivot interview. The next episode will be Marc’s story of moving abroad and taking the job with him. The fourth episode of the month is a QA episode with Elizabeth Rabaey. [3:43] Marc introduces Susan Lahey and welcomes Susan to the podcast. Download Link |iTunes|Stitcher Radio|Google Podcast|Podbean|TuneIn|Overcast [3:52] Susan is always tempted to stay home with her adult children and watch Netflix, paint, and hide out from everyone. So she makes herself go do stuff, instead. She just got a tattoo that says “Life is Short.” [5:12] Susan was a newspaper reporter for the beginning of her career, at the Kansas City Star, from age 17 until college and as her first job out of school. After several years she got a job as an associate editor at the business lifestyle magazine in KC. She left there to raise a family, freelancing from home. [5:54] At age 42, Susan was divorced, took the children and moved off the grid to New Mexico, taking what work she could get. The Taos News wanted her as a freelancer but didn’t move on it. [6:55] She started working as a community liaison for an EPA technical assistance group for a Superfund project. That was tough since she did not speak Spanish and was new to the community. She also did substitute teaching. She was broke. [7:26] Susan and her children volunteered at a food pantry for the food. Finally, she got on as a freelancer with the Taos News, for maybe $100 an article. [8:16] Taos was challenging in being far behind the times. Susan was out of touch with the times as a freelancer. She wanted to give her children a better opportunity. [9:38] After a trip to Europe they were motivated to change their lives. Austin had “a similar vibe” to Taos, a University, and a lot of intellectual capital. Susan rented an apartment and drove the family to Austin to start over. [10:43] Susan finally sold the Taos house for “five dollars.” At first, she wrote eHow articles, but that was unsatisfying for her. She attended networking events and learned how to market herself online with blogs and web content. She pushed herself, using EMDR psychotherapy to help her overcome fear and stress of networking. [15:33] Creatives are typically introverted and selling yourself as a creative is really hard for them. Confidence is essential for approaching clients. [17:26] Marc was Susan’s first major client. Then she got some blogs. Through a contact who was recommended by Marc, she started writing tech news articles for a tech startup publication and finally got paid reasonably. She has covered SXSW for six years and went to Thailand and Norway to see their technologies. [19:36] Susan got an article in Wired and is hoping to write more for them. She had also written a profile for bootstrap guru Bijoy Goswami, who works people through the psychological risks and fears of starting your own business. [20:10] Bijoy introduced Susan to his best friend, Danny Gutknecht, and Susan worked with him on one book and other writings. They will write more. Most of her work is with Danny. When Susan has ‘bandwidth,’ she looks for freelance work online and networks. [21:15] Susan mentors and one woman she mentored hooked her up with a gig. She still does journalism. [21:40] Susan was an old-school journalism person. Her idea of journalism came from All the President’s Men. Her sister was a journalist. She never imagined journalism wouldn’t be there for her. Most of her friends who were journalists are out of jobs. Journalism is dying. It can’t find a business model that works today. [22:36] Susan never imagined she would be a tech writer or a business writer, and she is so glad she pursued both of those because that’s the direction the world is going. [23:29] When Susan was asked to find her ‘why’ she had never thought about it. She realized that she liked writing about people who were doing scary, brave things. She uses Marc as an example. When he started his business, it was scary new for him, but also, scary new for job pivoters he is helping. [24:41] For the most part, Susan’s career pivot has turned out amazingly. She’s definitely not rich, but she’s supporting herself, doing what she loves. It fuels her as well as paying her. [25:09] Marc is proud of Susan. In spite of her hard times, she survived. Her three great children have gone to college on full scholarships, and are doing well. Her oldest is teaching English in Tangier, as Susan continues to enjoy her career. [25:49] People tell Susan she’s brave, but they have no idea how hard she has to work to be brave. She’s sometimes afraid, but she just makes herself do things. She recommends people examine why they act a certain way, or go in a certain direction. People need to steer their own ship. Susan hopes to move to Morocco next year. [28:57] Marc has been working with Susan since 2012, when she went through an early version of Marc’s career pivot evaluation. If you would like to know more about this process, listen to episodes 48 through 51 â€" a series called, “Can Tim Repurpose His Career?” [31:27] Next week’s episode will be all about the process of the Miller’s move to Ajijic, Mexico in 2018. Marc is moving, but not retiring. He will run everything from Mexico. Your career path might be right under your nose! - Hallie Crawford

Your career path might be right under your nose! I was thrilled that our Career Intensive with the Georgia Tech Alumni Association went so well last month. Working with one of the participants reminded me that sometimes the right idea for your next career path is right under your nose. Katie was going around and around in her head with different career ideas, from being a professional organizer, to working in a theater and even thinking of continuing to work in a library as she does now. Then one day she sent me an email and said she was poking around on Facebook and realized she should try to turn her passion about animals into some kind of career path.  She talks about animals needing to be rescued all the time, and in the past didn’t think of this as being a possible career path. She’s gone from emailing me about her career ideas and feeling stuck to writing at least once a week about something new she has found as a possible job with animal rescue organizations. I am so happy for her! Look close by because sometimes your dream job is not that far off from what you are already doing.
